Computer Skills and Concepts: A Mastery Approach
This book is organized into nine modules, or units of instruction. The nine modules are:
Introduction to Computers and Technology
Word Processing
Electronic Spreadsheets
Advanced Word Processing and Database Management
The Internet
Desktop Publishing and Computer Graphics
Presentation Graphics
Tool Software
Application Skills
The format of each of the nine modules is described below:
Introduction. The module introduction is intended to provide a general overview of the subject of the module and the material and assignments presented in it.
Module Objectives. Objectives are stated in terms of measurable student outcomes. Learners can use the objectives to determine their mastery of the module. Both instructors and learners can see clearly what learners are expected to know and to be able to do after completing each module.
Materials Needed. This is an explanation of the specific materials including computer hardware, software, practice files, and other materials needed in order to properly complete the module.
How to Proceed. Step-by-step instructions are provided to explain to learners exactly what they are to do.
Reading Material. Each module includes both conceptual information and specific instructions on using software to complete tasks. Important terms are included and appear in boldface type. Many illustrations are included to help clarify the information and to add interest.
Important Terms. Important terms are listed near the end of each module. These terms are printed in boldface print within the module and are defined and described in context.
Sample Test Questions. Sample test questions are provided to give learners a preview of questions from the module quiz. These self-tests can be used by learners to test their mastery of the module content.
Computer Application Exercises. These exercises are hands-on exercises designed to help students master the skills covered in the module. Describing computer skills is of little value if these skills are not put to immediate, practical use. There are two to four exercises for each module. Each exercise will result in a printed document or completed questionnaire may be turned in to the course instructor. Instructors may also elect to have students submit the exercises electronically rather in printed form. Since this book includes forms and software questionnaires that may be completed by students and turned in to the instructor, this book should not be resold or purchased used since these materials may have been removed.
