The Art of Living: Pathways to Personal Growth, by Mark J. Minelli, 2007
ISBN 978-1-58874-663-4 List Price: $25.80

The Art of Living: Pathways to Personal Growth explores our human potential in order to reach our highest level of functioning.  Buddhism fundamentals describe the process of getting in touch with our deepest feelings or nature.  Nature has a way of slowing life down and opening up oneself to the world and our surroundings.  This harmony can be experienced by spending more time in a natural surrounding.  Through this experience you will start to notice things like the wind blowing, birds singing, trees and plants swaying, the smell of leaves, etc.

This involvement with nature returns us back to our primal self’s.  We have been taken from living in small bands of families or tribes to the development of towns and cities.  Often our new living conditions have distanced us from our interconnectedness with the natural world.  Nature will move on its own timetable as the seasons change, the leaves turn color, grass grows, etc. Our lives will also change as we mature and take time to reflect on the journey.

The Art of Living: Pathways to Personal Growth will help you search and find your personal direction in life.  Essays provided will afford you with a chance to reflect on your life and the people close to you.  Personal growth is important for us to reach a state of arête and happiness.

The Art of Living:  Discovering the Transcendent and Transpersonal in Our Lives, by Mark J. Minelli and Mark A. Schroll, 2003
ISBN 1-58874-249-0 List Price: $19.95

Listings for self-help specialists claiming to have insight into the Art of Living exceed the number of ads for used cars and legal services in some newspapers.  These Gurus of psychology and psychiatry are everywhere; all claiming to have the latest breakthroughs in therapy and medicinal cures that will soon have us feeling better than new.  So what makes this book any different?

Influenced by Abraham H. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs model, Part 1 of this book, written by Mark J. Minelli, Ph.D., provides a road map to avoid the obstacles we face throughout life in our journey to the top of the mountain.  The top of the mountain represents what Maslow referred to as self-actualization, which symbolizes our having reached all the goals we have set for our self.

Most of us, including many psychologists, believe Maslow’s stages of personality end with self-actualization and are unfamiliar with the transcendent stage of personal growth.  Nor are most of us familiar with how the stage of transcendence is related to the history of psychology.  Nor are most of us familiar with the variety of intellectual developments that have been enriched and have grown from the investigation of transcendence.

Part 2, written by Mark A. Schroll, Ph.D., assists us in understanding the wide influence that Maslow’s stage of transcendence has had on our personal and cultural growth.  Its essays include discussions on dream analysis, understanding paranormal experiences, the history and growth of humanistic and transpersonal psychology, ecopsychology, the Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness, and the need for a new philosophy of life.
